Why You Should Consider a Vacation in China

by Angela Efros on November 11, 2013

IMG_1809For many, China may not be on the top of your Vacation Wish List.  Right now, more than ever, there are several reasons to consider China as an ideal destination.

Affordability

Round trip airfare to China can cost between $600 and $1200 when booked in advance and that will be your most expensive part of the trip.  Travel in China is pretty affordable.  A bottle of water will cost you around 20 cents.  An average priced hotel can be found for $40 a night.  Meals can be covered for $5 to $15 a day.

Culture

IMG_1600China has a history thousands of years long that is fascinating to learn about.  Chinese people love discussing their culture and history with foreign visitors.  From the majesty of the Great Wall to the artistry of Chinese calligraphy, there are amazing things to see all over China.

Food

The food in China is nothing like what you may expect.  Chinese restaurants in America typically serve a style of food from Hong Kong.  But, there are many more types of food around China as diverse as the country.  Food is very important in Chinese culture.  Every city you go to will have its own special dishes.  And just like Chinese people love to share their culture with you, they will also love sharing their local delicacies.

Convenience

The high-speed rail system in China is incredible for traveling.  Tickets can be purchased in train stations last minute or in advance.  Hotels will often have services to assist you in booking tickets.  The train is comfortable and tickets are affordable, making it easy for you to get around the country.  A trip from Beijing to Shanghai, a distance of 770 miles takes about 5 hours and will cost about $85.  Shorter trips cost even less.  Another perk is that you can see China’s beautiful countryside while you ride the train.

IMG_0361Let me address some of the fears you may have about traveling to China.

Language

The biggest one for most people is the language barrier.  This is really not as big of a deal as you might think.  Chinese people study English from elementary school all the way up to college.  Although they are often shy to IMG_1588speak English with a foreigner, there are a lot of people who can speak English.  Chinese who can speak English will be more than happy to help you out if they see you trying to communicate in Chinese or with someone who can’t speak English.

Safety

I believe traveling in China is safer than living in America.  Violent crimes are rare.  The only thing you should really be concerned about is pickpocketing.  Make sure your bags close well and don’t carry things in easily accessible places like back pockets.  There are a lot of people in China, so in crowded places be conscious of protecting your valuables.  You just need to be aware and you’ll be fine.

There are so many things to see in China.  Beautiful landscapes, cultural relics, traditional dances, modern cities, vast deserts, relaxing beaches, and much more.  So don’t let the fear of the unknown keep you from traveling to one of the world’s great travel destinations.

Katherine and meI have been living in China for 3 years and have had the opportunity to meet the people and travel all over China.  It is a beautiful country.

Have you been to China?  What was your favorite place to go?
